A Capella singing
The reason I sing "a capella".
The reason that I sing "a capella" or "without musical instruments" is because I consider singing in the worship service to be a thanksgiving to God for the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for the reconciliation of the church to God. Jesus Christ made this sacrifice for me and my bretheren. We have a new covenant within the body of Christ and I want to do the things that Jesus our Lord, who spoke for God, asks of me.
Romans 15
7 Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God. 8 Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumsicion for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers, 9 and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written: "For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles, And sing to Your name."
Because we are freed from the law, we are not to become entangled in it again. Instrumental music was commanded by God to be used in the temple during the sacrifices, and is part of the old law. Paul warns us that the ordinances of sacrifice are not to be used by the church.
Galatians 5
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of dondage. 2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6 For in Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.
The use of instuments in the temple sacrificial worship is mentioned in these two passages.
II Chronicles 29
20 Then King Hezekiah rose early, gathered the rulers of the city, and went up to the house of the Lord. 21 And they brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats for a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. Then he commanded the priests, the sons of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the Lord. 22 So they killed the bulls, and the priests received the blood and sprinkled it on the altar. Likewise they killed the rams and sprinkled the blood on the altar. They also killed the lambs and sprinkled the blood on the altar. 23 Then they brought out the male goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, and they laid their hands on them. 24 And the priests killed them; and they presented their blood on the altar as a sin offering to make an atonement for all Israel, for the king commanded tht the burnt offering and the sin offering be made for all Israel.
25 And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, of Gad the king's seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for thus was the commandment of the Lord by His prophets. 26 The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. 27 Then Hezekiah commanded them to offer the burnt offering on the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the Lord also began, with the trumpets and with the instruments of David king of Israel. 28 So all the assembly worshiped, the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished.
Psalm 78
Sing aloud to God our strength;
Make a jouful shout to the God of Jacom.
2 Raise a song and strike the timbrel,
The pleasant harp with the lute.
3 Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon,
Ath the full mon, on our solemn feast day.
4 For this is a statute for Israel,
A law of the God of Jacob.
I want to sing and make the melody in my heart. As a Christian, I want to worship in Spirit and in Truth. For me, the melody in my heart is the love of God, the joy of having learned of Jesus, and the peace of His promises. The melody is in my spirit, and not the physical playing of musical insturments by someone else. I don't want to take any chance being entangled in the old law. I hope this helps you to understand my position.
To my bretheren with love in Christ.
p.s. Why do I quote so many scriptures?
Jeremiah 17:9
"The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Jeremiah 10:23
O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his won steps.
